Gentle Drying

A gin's drying system can have a major impact on all stakeholders of the cotton that passes through it. Drying system abuse often stems from poor drying system performance. Strong performance offers the luxury of gentle operation. A drying system is evaluated based on the following criteria:
  • The air volume to cotton ratio (cubic feet of air per pound of seedcotton)

  • Heater turndown ratio

  • Smooth temperature modulation throughout the heater operating range

  • Temperature change response time

  • Pressure drop across the heater(s)

  • Heater safety systems

  • Amount of dryer slippage

  • Does the dryer promote single-locking?

  • Pressure drop across the dryer(s)

  • Fan sizing for high air volumes

  • Pipe and cyclone sizing for high air volumes

  • Presence of devices to boost fan output

  • Is the majority of drying accomplished prior to the cotton entering cylinder cleaning machinery?

  • Amount of drying system leakage

  • Other points of excessive pressure drop

  • Proper system sizing for gin capacity

  • Qualified operators, training, and personnel oversight
